Sanford Clinic Women's Health

Sanford Clinic Downtown Healthcare is a collaboration of the South Dakota Department of Health's Family Planning Program and Sanford Clinic Women's Health. We are very dedicated to the reproductive health and well being of individuals in our community and consider education one of our main passions.

Our educational effort is headed by me, Pam Bauer, a community educator and nurse. In providing outreach education to the community, I have developed a presentation which emphasizes abstinence while including information on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and teen pregnancy prevention. I have also developed a presentation to help parents talk with their teens about sex and reproductive health. These presentations are free of charge.

The PowerPoint presentation I have developed for youth first reviews current statistics of STIs in the teenage population and then outlines five of the most prevalent STIs in our area (i.e. Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes, Genital Wart Virus [HPV], and finally HIV). The next segment of my presentation includes a brief discussion of birth control methods and finishes with a look at Abstinence and how to say “NO” to unwanted sexual advances. I include interactive activities such as role-playing, to encourage student participation and learning concerning sexual topics.

My presentation does include pictures of the STIs in the mouth and on the genitals. I am very flexible and will adapt my presentation to your specific needs. For example, in some venues I give information only on STIs and take out the pictures; in other instances I talk about STIs and abstinence and leave out information on birth control.

If you would like the full presentation as outlined above, it is best to allow approximately 90 minutes of time. I can either present this all in one day, or I can come back and present it on two separate occasions. I have found that with the intensity and importance of the content, it is best to schedule the presentation for two different sessions.  My youth presentation is appropriate for grades 7-12.

If you would like to schedule an educational session, or would like to visit with me regarding specific questions you might have, please e-mail me at bauerp@sanfordhealth.org or call (605) 334-5099. Further, if any of you have a youth (male or female) who is in need of our exam services or individualized education sessions, you can call our clinic to schedule an appointment.  The clinic functions on a sliding fee schedule, providing discounted services to those in financial need and youth under 18 can come without an adult.

With my scheduled shifts at the clinic, I am available for presentations all day on Tuesday & Thursday, and also on Friday afternoons. I look forward to hearing from you.
